“Dyess” Deserves a Ring

May 14th, 2008

mcdyess.jpg

As many of you know I worked as the Pistons’ PA announcer for sixteen years and, believe it or not, I received two championship rings.  Two cherished items that are stowed away in a safe place.   I remember being told that I had been voted (by the team and PSE officials) to receive them.  I nearly fainted that night and we received them the following year.  I could barely do that game because my eyes were constantly drawn to this piece of hardware that actually had my name inscribed on it.  My father passed away in 1982 and I thought “God he’d be proud.”  I was humbled beyond words and I remain so to this day.

As I watched Antonio McDyess play out of his masked mind last night I thought, this guy truly deserves a ring.  He is so likeable.  He will tell you the team is good enough to win another championship…and they are.  He will tell you the team is unselfish…and they are.  He will tell all he wants to do is contribute…and he does.  Good game or not he’ll muster that contagious smile and answer any question.  He exemplifies the team player and never makes it about HIM.  He only uses the word “I” when he feels he could have or should have made a bigger play or contribution.   He is a breath of fresh air in a sometimes rancid sports nation.   Antonio McDyess does it all and brings his all every night.  But he doesn’t have it all.  He doesn’t have a championship ring.

His grandmother passed earlier yesterday and the team tried to keep it from “Dyess” until after the game; however, a cousin called and told him at 3:00 PM.  His grandmother, Beatrice Harris, was like a second mom to Antonio.  After the game he said “I hope she would be happy with the way I played.”  Trust me, she was Antonio and she’ll be there guiding you the rest of the way.  For a player that gives Detroit his all I hope and pray you get it all.  And that includes a championship ring.

Randy Bachman Helping Out Ailing Brother Tim

May 13th, 2008

randy-bachman.jpg

Randy Bachman’s younger brother Tim Bachman, who was also a guitarist in Bachman-Turner Overdrive, suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. As a result, he is unable to work and has mounting medical bills. Randy will perform at a fundraiser for Tim tomorrow night in Abbotsford, Canada, just outside Vancouver. A post on Randy’s website says, “If you would like to join Tim’s friends and family in supporting him during this difficult time, please contact Tim’s son Paxton Bachman at PaxtonBachman-at-Hotmail-dot-com.” Since leaving B-T-O, Tim went on to work as a concert promoter and, most recently, a real estate agent.   BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Lights It Up at Theater Show

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band did their first theater show in 28 years last night, a benefit for the Count Basie Theater in Bruce’s backyard of Red Bank, New Jersey. It will go down as one of their greatest shows ever. Upon taking the stage, Springsteen announced that were doing his 1978 album Darkness on the Edge of Town in sequence. It didn’t start smoothly as there was a false start on “Badlands.” But after a few laughs things took off and ended 10 songs later with the title track. After a brief intermission they returned with a horn section embellished by members of his Seeger Sessions Band and did 1975’s Born to Run in its entirety. The night was capped by four additional songs, including the epics “Kitty’s Back” and “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight).” The show, which raised three-million dollars for the theater’s renovation, was filmed and recorded. Among those in the audience were 37 wounded soldiers from the Iraq war who came up from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D-C. Fans on the Springsteen chat boards were beside themselves as the set list was being posted. Most were upset that they did not shell out the 500-to-one-thousand-dollars per ticket, with such comments posted as — “This show is epicness beyond quantification;” “The crowd there deserves this for the money they dished;” and “I doubt any set list on the remaining Magic tour will top this.” The two tour premieres were “Factory” and “Raise Your Hand.” –Sal Cirrincione

I Miss Olympia Stadium

May 7th, 2008

olympia-1.jpg

On today’s Three at Three I featured Paul McCartney and Wings to commemorate their concert at the Olympia on this date in 1976.  At that show a member of the media angered Paul when he asked about the Beatles.  “It’s 1976 and I don’t think most of the people here care about what happened 10 years ago!” he retorts.  Got me thinking about the Olympia and what a great venue it was.  If you’re too young to remember the Olympia Google it and take a marvelous stroll through the storied history of the venue built in1927.

Late to the Eric Clapton Book Club Party

May 6th, 2008

Clapton: The Autobiography is a must read on your summer vacation.  Obvoiusly, I’m never the first to the finish line when it comes to new book releases, but I had Heaven And Hell by Don Felder to finish and I like to take my time.  Clapton’s travails are compelling, amazing, astonishing, very sad and ultimatley the story of one man’s journey that has me an even greater fan.   Read this book!

SAIM (Acronym)

March 7th, 2008

I like acronyms.  CEO, COB, NASA, FBI you catch my drift.  Actually acronyms were the precursors to “text speak” u know?  Remember D.R.E.A.D Detroit Rockers Engaged In The Abolition of Disco?  Well the other day I was walking Tug, my beloved Golden Retriever, when the snow began to fall…again!  I thought, snow again in Michigan.  So, if an old friend or a family member (who doesn’t live in Michigan) gives you a call and asks “how’s the weather?”  Tell em…SAIM (Snow Again In Michigan)

The Office Fridge

January 20th, 2008

I think any refrigerator is a lot like another person’s home medicine cabinet.  You can’t help but take a peek.   If your work place has a kitchen or an area to eat lunch or take your break, chances are you have the Old Office Fridge.  We do.  Two in fact.  That’s because we have three radio stations occupying our building.   At least once or twice a week I just have to take a peek inside.  To quote Keith Jackson, “Whoa Nelly”

Last Friday we received a company-wide email informing us that our side-by-side refrigerators would be gutted by COB. Here’s what was posted on our Old Office Fridge.

Apparently, we have abused our privileges and drastic actions were necessary.  Ladies and gentlemen we have a code green and I’ve decided to take you inside our kitchen to see what’s causing all the stink

Let’s have a peek.

Let’s take a closer look at the condiments door.  Notice the rogue yogurt container occupying it’s own space.  Why is it on it’s side and encased?  Any guesses what those two quart containers are?  And, do we have enough ketchup?

Now this is tough to look at.

Stop here if you have a queasy stomach!

Here’s the freezer.  You have been warned!

Finally, I wanted you to have a look at our kitchen microwave.  Imagine taking that Lean Cuisine (above) and poppin’ it in this little guy (below)?

Well, I hope you enjoyed a little peek inside our kitchen.   Send me your work refrigerator photos and I’ll post them on our site.  If I can get my hands on some freebies out of our prize closet your photo could turn your mold in to gold!  Send your photos to ken@wcsx.com
